Emergency Management in Thetford is managed by the Emergency Management Director and a group of dedicated volunteers.  The Emergency Management Director is appointed by the Selectboard and is responsible for serving the community by directing and coordinating emergency management to prevent/mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.

Emergencies and disasters can happen anytime: with or without warning; man-made or natural; affecting few or large numbers of people; cover a wide area or be very localized; severe, life-threatening to many or inconveniencing only a few; long-lived or of short duration. Preparing in advance for the unexpected makes sense.

The Thetford Elementary School is a certified Red Cross Shelter location for our local area.  In the event of a disaster, if you are in need of sheltering, please call ahead at 2‑1‑1 to ensure that the shelter is open. 211 is available 24/7 and staffed by people based in Vermont.  They will have the most up to date information on emergency shelters and availability in an emergency.  Please note that in large scale emergencies, it is likely that regional shelters will be opened instead of local shelters de to staffing and resource needs.  Our regional shelter is located in White River Junction VT at the Hartford High School.  To verify that the shelter is open and available, please contact 211.
